The Abbasids were an Arab dynasty who controlled the Islamic caliphate from around 750 AD to around 1260. They shifted the center of Islamic power from Damascus to Baghdad. They succeeded the Umayyad Caliphate, and were replaced by the Fatimid Caliphate.

The Abbasids created a large bureaucracy along Persian lines. However, the office of the caliph remained the most powerful position.

The Abbasids adopted many feature of Persian culture, most notably in art, but they remained Arabs and Sunni Muslims.
