Abdication is when a reigning monarch voluntarily gives up power in favor of another person. Abdications can occur when a monarch is too old to effectively rule, when they are forced to by another person, or when they no longer desire to rule. A famous case of abdication was when Edward VIII abdicated so that he could marry a divorced American, Wallis Simpson, which was prevented by the Church of England at the time.
