Abraham was a Hebrew prophet who is believed to have lived circa 3000 B.C. His story is told in the Book of Genesis of the Bible. After receiving messages from God, he left his home in Mesopotamia for Canaan, the area of modern-day Israel. This was referred to as the Promised Land. He is the unifying persona of the Abrahamic religions of Judaism, Christianity and Islam; Moses, Jesus and Muhammad trace their lineage to him. He is considered the founding figure of the Israelites.
