In music, an accompaniment is a part played in a musical piece that is supplementary to the melody. In a solo piece, the accompaniment may be played by the person playing the melody, as on a piano, for example. In a duet, trio, quartet or larger arrangement, there is commonly a dedicated accompanist. In a symphony or large ensemble an entire section may accompany another's melody.
