Alexander Graham Bell was an American inventor, famous for his patent of the telephone. He is commonly credited with inventing it although evidence suggests that that is not true - Italian Antonio Meucci was the first to devise an electronic system for voice communications, but was unable to secure a patent due to problems with his legal documents. Bell was the namesake of the Bell Telephone Company, which grew to dominate the telephone market and was a leader in privately-funded scientific research during the Cold War. The company was broken up due to its monopoly on communications, and now exists as Verizon, AT&T and other businesses.
