Arizona is a U.S. state in the American Southwest. Arizona borders Nevada and Utah to the north, California to the west, and New Mexico to the east. Much of Arizona is covered by the arid Sonoran Desert. Arizona became part of the United States in 1848 after the Mexican-American War. Arizona has a large Latino and Native American, particularly Navajo, population. Arizona's capital and largest city is Phoenix, the largest U.S. state capital.
