Athens is the capital and largest city of Greece. It has existed for thousands of years, from its genesis in the time of Ancient Greece, through the Greco-Persian Wars and the Peloponnesian War, to successive conquests by the Romans, Ottomans, and Germans, and finally the inaugural 1896 Olympic Games and the modern era. It is home to the famous hilltop temple complex, the Acropolis, which includes the Parthenon. It is also considered the birthplace of democracy and even of Western civilization, as it was home to philosophers such as Plato and Socrates. Growing from its ancient roots, it is a modern metropolis of several million people, and the economic, political, and cultural center of Greece.
