The Bering Strait is a body of water between the Pacific and Arctic oceans, separating the region of Chukotka in Russia from Alaska in the United States. The Bering Strait is a relatively shallow body of water and is about 60 miles wide at its narrowest point. The largest islands located in the strait are Saint Lawrence Island and the Little and Big Diomede islands. About 20,000 years ago, the area was exposed above sea level, forming a region called the Bering land bridge.
