Berlin is the capital of Germany. It is located in the eastern half of the country. Berlin has been a political center since the 18th century, when it was the capital of Prussia. Berlin was devastated by the Battle of Berlin in 1945, and was split into West Berlin and East Berlin after the war. In 1961, the Berlin Wall further increased the separation. The Berlin Wall was torn down in 1989 and the two halves of the city were reunited. Berlin hosted several games of the 2006 World Cup. The Brandenburg Gate is a notable landmark and icon of the city.
