British Columbia is a province of Canada, located on the Pacific coast. It is Canada's fifth largest territorial unit and third largest province. Originally settled by Europeans in the 19th century, the fur trade drove many hunters and merchants there. Trade routes running across Canada would end in Vancouver, which emerged as a significant trading port. Today, it is British Columbia's largest city; the Vancouver urban area has a population of over 1.2 million. This makes up a significant portion of British Columbia's 4.5 million people. The capital is Victoria, located on Vancouver Island.
