Indiana is a state in the central United States. The largest city is Indianapolis, which is also the capital. The state has a population of about 6.5 million. It was formed in the early 1800s from the Northwest Ordinance, from land ceded by the state of Virginia. Indiana has a short coastline on Lake Michigan, with much of its southern border formed by the Ohio River. It borders Michigan to the north, Illinois to the west, Kentucky to the south and Ohio to the east. Other major cities in Indiana include Evansville, Fort Wayne and Gary.
