Johann Sebastian Bach (d. 1750) was German composer, organist, harpsichordist and violinist of the 17th and 18th centuries. He is best known for his composition of Baroque music, making full use of counterpoint and harmony to create polyphonic sounds and to evolve existing regional styles. Many of his works were pieces of church music, using features from Italy and France to enhance German sounds. His most famous compositions include his Passions, Brandenburg Concertos and The Well-Tempered Clavier. Bach's music is both technically challenging and intellectually deep. He was born into a musical family; his father taught him the violin and harpsichord. Bach was well-known and respected as a musician in his life but was only considered a great composer in later generations. Today, he is considered one of the foremost Baroque composers and one of the greatest composers of all time.
