Kansas is a U.S. state in the Midwest. Kansas is bordered by Nebraska to the north, Colorado to the west, Missouri to the east, and Oklahoma to the south. Kansas joined the United States in the 1850s, after a period known as Bloody Kansas, when abolitionists and slave owners fought for dominance. Kansas is largely an agricultural state due to its location in the fertile Great Plains. Kansas is almost perfectly rectangular and is very flat. Kansas' capital is Topeka, while its largest city is Kansas City.
