Kazan (Russian: Казань) is a city in eastern European Russia, in the Republic of Tatarstan. It is the 8th largest city in Russia with a population of 1,143,000 people and is located on the Volga river. The city has a substantial minority of Tatars and serves as Tatarstan's capital. It is often called Russia's "third capital" (after Moscow and St. Petersburg) due to its important historical status. Today, it is one of Russia's fastest-growing cities.
