Louisiana is a U.S. state in the Southern United States. Louisiana borders Texas to the west, Arkansas to the north, and Mississippi to the east. Louisiana has many swamps and bayous due to the Mississippi River and the Gulf of Mexico. Louisiana was colonized by the French, and was a part of and the namesake of the Louisiana Purchase. The largest city in Louisiana, New Orleans, was one of the most prosperous cities in the United States in the 19th century. Today, Louisiana has a large petroleum industry. Louisiana's capital is Baton Rouge.
