A Mersenne prime is a prime number that can be written as 2^n-1, where n is a composite number. Most of the largest known primes are Mersenne primes, and whether or not there are infinite Mersenne primes is an open question in mathematics. If 2n-1 is prime, then 2n-1-1(2n-1) is guaranteed to be a perfect number.
