Minnesota is a state in the northern United States. It has a population of about 5 million people and borders Canada. The state also borders South Dakota and North Dakota to the west, Iowa to the south and Wisconsin to the southeast. Minnesota has a water border with Michigan on Lake Superior. The capital is at Saint Paul, while the largest city is Minneapolis, with a population of 300,000. The St. Paul-Minneapolis metropolitan area, known as the "twin cities", has a population of over 1 million and forms the economic heart of the state. Minnesota is pockmarked with thousands of small glacial lakes, and is bordered by Lake Superior to the east. The Lake of the Woods, located on the United States-Canada Border, includes the northernmost point in the lower 48 states. The Mississippi River originates in Minnesota. Other major cities include St. Cloud, Rochester and Bloomington.
