North Carolina is a U.S. state in the Mid-Atlantic and the Southern United States. North Carolina borders Virginia to the north, South Carolina to the south, and Tennessee to the west. The first English colony in the future United States was established at Roanoke in North Carolina in the 1580s by Sir Walter Raleigh, although it was abandoned later. North Carolina was a member of the Confederate States of America during the American Civil War. The largest city in North Carolina is Charlotte, and the capital is Raleigh.
