Paraguay is a nation in South America. It is one of two South American nations to be landlocked, along with its neighbor Bolivia. The capital of Paraguay is Asunción. Roman Catholicism is the primary language. Most Paraguayans speak Spanish or Guarani, the native language.
Paraguay was colonized by the Spanish in the 17th century. Paraguay gained independence from Spain in the early 1800s. Paraguay fought the Paraguayan War later in the century, losing much of its territory and prestige. In the latter half of the 20th century, Alfred Stroessner became dictator of Paraguay. He improved infrastructure and education, but he was oppressive and authoritarian. He was thrown out in 1989.
