Philadelphia, commonly referred to as Philly or the City of Brotherly Love, is a major U.S. city located on the Delaware River across from New Jersey, in the state of Pennsylvania. It is the largest consolidated city-county in the United States. Philadelphia was one of the first cities to be established in the United States, and hosted both the First and Second Continental Congresses during the American Revolution. Philadelphia waned in political importance after the selection of New York City and later Washington, D.C. as the capital. However, Philadelphia remains an economic and cultural center. Philadelphia is home to the Philadelphia Phillies, the Philadelphia Eagles, the Philadelphia 76ers, and the Philadelphia Flyers.
