Robert E. Lee was an American military general, born in Virginia, who fought for the Confederacy in the US Civil War. He is considered one of the finest military strategists of his time, if not of all time. His military genius allowed the Confederate States of America to win several key battles early in the Civil War, which significantly prolonged the conflict and almost won the war. Despite his prowess, the South's economic drawbacks eventually led to his surrender at Appomattox Courthouse in Virginia.
