The Southwestern United States is a region of the United States that includes New Mexico, Arizona, Nevada, Utah, Colorado, and parts of California. The Southwest is generally arid, and contains the Sonoran and Mojave Desert, as well as the Great Basin and the Colorado Plateau. The Southwest was settled in the 16th century by the Spanish, but it was only incorporated into the U.S. in 1848 after the Mexican-American War. The Southwest still has a large Latino population, although many of them are recent immigrants.
