Sunni Islam is one of the two major branches of Islam, along with Shi'a Islam. Sunni Islam is generally considered the more conservative of the two, and has far more followers. The Sunni and Shiites disagree about the proper successor to Muhammad: the Sunnis believe that any pious Muslim man may become caliph, while the Shiites argue that only a descendant of Muhammad should have that position.
