Thomas Jefferson (died July 4, 1826) was the third President of the United States, and the drafter of the Declaration of Independence. Jefferson oversaw the Louisiana Purchase, the Lewis and Clark expedition, and the prelude to the War of 1812. Jefferson is also noted for founding the University of Virginia, and for his home, Monticello.
