Tokyo, formerly Edo, is the capital of Japan, and the largest city in the world, with nearly 35 million people in its urban area. Tokyo is located on Tokyo Bay on the island of Honshu. It grew to prominence in Japan in the 18th century, and became a modern metropolis during the Meiji Restoration. In 1923, it was almost totally destroyed by the Great Kanto Earthquake, and it was reconstructed mostly with earthquake-proof buildings. During World War II, it was again destroyed by firebombing from the United States. After the war, it rose from the ashes and became a major center of global business, in the company of New York City and London. It is home to the Tokyo Metro, one of the largest rapid transit systems in the world.
