The Ukrainian language (Ukrainian: українська мова, tr. ukrainska mova) is an East Slavic language, spoken most widely in western Ukraine. It is the sole official language of Ukraine, even though the Russian language, to which it is closely related, is more commonly spoken (especially in the east of the country). It is also spoken by the Ukrainian diaspora in countries like Canada, the United States and Brazil. In total, approximately 45 million people speak Ukrainian, though numbers are hard to obtain because many people who claim it as their language actually speak a Russian-Ukrainian interlanguage or simply a dialect of Russian. Also, most residents of Ukraine put Ukrainian as their "mother tongue" but Russian as their "primary language".
