The Vikings were seafaring raiders from Scandinavia who raided, conquered and settled coastal areas of Europe from the middle of the 9th century to around 1100 AD. The Vikings were also explorers and colonists, settling parts of Iceland, Greenland, Ireland, and England, and becoming the first Europeans to reach North America. The Vikings were mainly followers of the Norse religion; after Christianization they gave up their raiding ways. Although Vikings are stereotypically portrayed as wearing horned helmets, this was almost certainly not the case, as they would be unwieldy in battle.
