The Yellow River is a river in northern China. It empties into the Yellow Sea. Its name comes from the yellow color of the loess, the nutrient-rich soil it leaves behind after it floods. The Yellow River has been a center of Chinese civilization since antiquity. The Grand Canal links the Yellow River with the Yangtze River in the south.
