The Zuiderzee was a shallow inland sea in the Netherlands, with an average depth of 4-5 meters and a 300-mile coastline. In the early 20th century, the Zuiderzee Works began as an effort to create additional land, and by the 1930s it had been transformed into the IJsselmeer. The former Zuiderzee is now composed of Flevoland, the IJsselmeer and the Markermeer.
